Everything Has An End

Winter ends, spring ends, summer ends, fall ends, snow melts, rain evaporates. I can go on and on. They do end yet they come back. Cycle of life, we call it.

Now, my camera Canon 20D finally took its last breath on February 21st after probably just over 100 thousand shots. It happened to get the continuous shutter clicking syndrome which happened when I took it outside for photographing (-15C at least). Reading about it I found that my shutter is definitely gone. Should I replace the shutter on the 20D, or this must be a coincidence because I been having a big temptation to get the 7D? May be its time for an upgrade. However, I had a plan for two cameras, because I just hate changing lenses (and getting dust), and I wouldn't mind having at least two lenses always ready to shoot. I might see, may be if I get good price on 7D, I will repair the 20D also.

Here I am leaving you with one of the last photographs I took with my original 20D. We still have winter in effect, but hasn't been that cold, and as I will be missing out on the photo shooting for few weeks, I know that winter will be back next year.

  1. I like both of these photos. I strive to find things like this every fall and winter but last year was a mess with my oxygen tank so I have promised myself to get out in the car and get around more. I will try to get some cool landscapes.

I admire you and your cameras and lenses. I didn't know it until recently but Canon has a life expectancy of 100,000 clicks and then things start going hay wire. Maybe that's what happened to your 20D. Each Canon and each year has a different number of clicks related to them and the year and the model. I didn't bother to read the fine print.

I wouldn't want to spend a couple of grand on any camera only to have it fail on 100,000 clicks.

  2. That's beautiful. Is it a rose hip? I had rose hip tea once and discovered I prefer looking at them, not drinking them. Yech!

I know the feeling of having two cameras to avoid dust. My digital camera has dust on the sensor even though I was as careful as could be when changing lenses. Why can't they fix this issue and save us PhotoShop time?

  3. Sorry to hear about your camera. I've heard good things about the 7D, and I'm sure you'll get things squared away and back in shape again before too much time has passed. Great photographs, too! Cheers!

  4. Hi Anna - I hate the way they don't make things to last. A new one will be fun - I have been giving it thought myself. My Sony DSLR is now going on 6 years - I am afraid of problems arriving too.

    Your winter images are beautiful!

Hope you are well - take care!

  5. Lovely simple and understated images Anna. I am sure you will enjoy a new camera and I agree about having two and not keep changing lenses. If only they weren't so expensive Mr Canon.

  6. Very creative pictures that come with appropriate title ans story.

I don't know what are the shutter count of my 50D.
Hope you are clicking again with your new Conans.

  8. I'm sorry to hear about your camera problems. Your 20D certainly took wonderful pictures, but, of course, having a great eye as you do helps as well. I can understand the desire for two cameras. It's sometimes frustrating having to quickly change lenses, but I don't know how I would manage two camera bodies on hikes. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I'm looking forward to more gret pictures.

  9. Both beautiful shots!
Sorry your camera has died. Maybe this is a good sign that you get a new one?

  10. I feel your pain! My Fujifilm FinePix S8000fd digital camera kicked the bucket last week! I may have to resort to using my father's box brownie for future posts! Great images too by the way. (I better say that before I go or you'll have my guts for garters)

    Take Care,
    Peter

  13. I would definitely fix the dead one, unless the repair costs as much as a new one.

  15. Hey Anna,

Yes, finally winter is coming to an end: thank God.
Well, I am not being totally fair here because Portugal kicked winter a month ago now...but still...the bloke (winter) is officially around until the 21st of March.

You, my dear, are an artist! And the camera is your brush :D.

    Cheers

  16. Anna:

Beautiful, just beautiful. You are absolutely my most favorite nature photographer. And I have seen so many great pictures by so many talented blogger friends. All of you are great, but you are 110%.

    Happy trails.

  17. Your photos are breath-taking, Anna. Love the picture of you and your son on your avatar, too.

Hope you got the deal you wanted on the 7D. I love the newer and lighter cameras. That's one of the bonuses of having a newer one.

  18. ANNA - The photos are gorgeous.

When I read your post title I gasped! Now I'm relieved to read that the post is about your camera. I was afraid you were going to tell us you're so busy with Matthew that you are leaving your blog for awhile. I'm glad that's not the case.

In case you are interested, I recently bought a Nikon point and shoot, which I find very handy for longer walks and hikes. I could not handle the weight of my D-SLR any longer, if I'm going to be carrying it for any length of time.

Let me know if you want to hear more about it!

  19. The 20D is dead long live the 7D!

Very nice photos…they just pop off the screen!

Winter? I have heard of it, of course here in Vancouver it is the tropics having to cut down the palm trees like dandelions ;)

  21. Both are very nice shots. Too bad about your camera, but 100,000 shots sounds like it gave you a reasonably long life.

  28. Hello Anna, both very nice and enjoyable pictures! I find Canon cameras excellent, I have a Canon Powershot and it works so well.
    Have a pleasant day!

  29. Lovely photos, and I would say your 20D has served you well. I've been thinking of getting a point and shoot that could always be with me. Shiprock, one of my favourite photographers has just bought one. It has a 35X zoom! Here's the link to his picture of an owl using that camera: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ericksondrive/5432778010/

Whatever you buy, I know the photos will have the same wonderful "Anna" flavour that I so enjoy:)

  30. Anna, thanks for stopping by! I always appreciate your insightful comments. My apologies for be tardy in replying, the past few days have been quite full. I don't think I've ever redesigned my blog, though I do occasionally revamp the colour scheme. Cheers!

  32. Sorry about the camera. I know how attached we become to something that means so much, a photographer's connection to the world....

A lovely picture, this one spot of color in the landscape, like a warm breath, like hope :-)

  33. Beautiful images Anna, lovely close-up details. I'm with you, I don't like changing lenses especially when I'm out hiking. It's always good to have a backup camera. Having the 20d repaired would of course depend on the cost. Best of luck with purchasing your new camera.

  34. Poor camera. Get it repaired, not worn out. It has done so much for you, and you anyway need 2 cameras :)

I love these 2 photos the amazing 20D has pixelled.

  35. outstanding images and hope you upgraded your camera!

  39. Anna,

Currently, price of 7D is not expensive in my opinion. I think this will be good opportunity to upgrade your photography gear. You will love 7D trust me.

By the way, you photos are nice as always.
